An oversupply of bananas in Australia has caused prices of the fruit to fall meaning growers are struggling to remain profitable
The ABC has reported supermarkets are now selling bananas for as low as A$1 per kg.
Australian Banana Growers Council president and Tully banana farmer Cameron MacKay told the ABC an oversupply of the fruit has been pushing down prices.
'After six months of at or below the cost of production, it's definitely chewing into the bank balances of all growers and we're all feeling the pressure at the moment, so it's definitely a tough period for growers,' he said.
'When it's a period of oversupply obviously we are getting a lot less than what we require for producing bananas and that's how it has been for a little while now.'
He hoped lower prices would help push excess supply through the market.
