Azadpur Mandi in North Delhi, which is reckoned to be the largest fruit and veg wholesale market anywhere in Asia, has reportedly stopped imports of apples from Turkey.

The decision is said to be a response to Turkey’s stated support for Pakistan following recent hostilities between the two Asian neighbours, and comes amid apparent demands from Delhi traders to block all Turkish products.

“We have decided to discontinue all new imports of apples from Turkey, “ market chairman Meetha Ram Kriplani was quoted in The Economic Times. “While consignments ordered earlier will still arrive, no further trade in apples or other produce will take place going forward.”

He added: “We have supported Turkish trade for years, but the current circumstances have left us with no choice.”

The value of Turkey’s apple exports to India have increased steadily over the past decade, from a relatively tiny US$70,000 in 2015 to US$90.3mn in 2024, according to UN Comtrade.

The most recent figure was down slightly on the 2023 result, when India spent just shy of US$99.9mn on imported Turkish apples.

In volume terms, Turkey shipped just over 117,000 tonnes to India in 2024, compared with 129,862 tonnes in the previous 12 months.
