Association’s president, Gabriel Amaros, calls for faster modernisation of small-scale agriculture
Agriculture will play a key role in advancing Peru’s economy under the new government, but faster progress is needed in the modernisation of the country’s production base to make the most of new opportunities.

This was the takeaway of a speech given by Gabriel Amaros, president of the Association of Agricultural Producer Guilds of Peru (Agap), during this year’s edition of the Agrofest Perú trade show, which took place in Lima from 1-3 July, as reported in Agraria.pe.
Amaros said Peru is entering a new phase with a new government, requiring rapid progress on a development agenda that enables the country to grow by at least 6 per cent and resolves the major issues affecting the population across all regions. He said both small-scale farming and modern agro-export and agro-industrial operations have a vital role to play in ensuring sustainable regional growth, creating more jobs, and improving the population’s well-being.
“The country also needs to improve rural connectivity, develop water infrastructure, expand markets, modernise access to financing, and, in general, improve conditions that foster investment for the competitive and sustainable development of the entire agricultural sector. And we need to do this urgently,” he said.
According to Amoros, Agrofest provided an opportunity to analyse the sector’s various challenges and seek solutions – ranging from the El Niño phenomenon to issues such as competitiveness, infrastructure, water management, innovation, technology, research, sustainability, training, market access, and territorial development.
