This week’s Fruit Logistica served as the backdrop for the official presentation of Camposol’s new genetic breeding programme, Origen.

The company said the initiative marks a milestone in its evolution and opens a new chapter in its history, integrating nearly three decades of agricultural experience in the field with advanced science and technology, as part of a strategic and investment-driven plan focused on long-term growth.

Origen is a varietal innovation programme designed to address the main challenges facing the sector: productivity, consistent quality, and adaptability to the world’s most demanding markets.

“Origen is not the result of improvisation. It is the outcome of more than a decade of research and learning focused specifically on the development of our genetic program, and it is a core pillar of our long-term strategy to build, from genetics, a stable and consistent supply model from a single origin,” said Ricardo Naranjo, CEO of Camposol.

Naranjo added that the programme approaches genetics from a responsible, long-term perspective, working from the ground up by enhancing natural processes to achieve more precise, consistent solutions aligned with real market needs.

According to Camposol, the name Origen combines the concept of beginning with the word gene, reflecting the essence of the programme: the development of advanced genetics focused on the attributes that create value across the entire value chain –flavour, firmness, consistency, visual quality, and productive performance – aligned with the expectations of growers, customers, and consumers worldwide.

“Origen encompasses the development of varieties with high agronomic performance and strong commercial appeal, conceived from their very origin with a clear long-term vision,” the company said.

First generation: Sol One and Maia Blue

As part of the launch, Camposol introduced the first generation of varieties developed under Origen.

“Sol One stands out for its high yields, firmness, and consistency, delivering production stability and excellent visual quality,” the company said. “Maia Blue, meanwhile, is characterised by its attractive appearance, natural shine, and smooth texture, reflecting precise and well-balanced genetics designed for the most demanding markets.”

As Federico Maggio, head of Camposol’s blueberries business unit explained: “These varieties have been developed with a strong focus on the attributes that truly generate value in the most demanding markets, such as flavour, firmness, consistency, and productive performance.

“Each new variety will have its own identity, essence, and name, because behind each one there is science, dedication, and a future-oriented vision that defines our Origen”.

Scaling and investments: toward a single-origin model from Peru

Origen is part of Camposol’s broader strategic and investment plan. In 2025, the company inaugurated Invitrolab, its biofactory located in Chao, Peru, with the capacity to produce more than 5mn plants per year. This infrastructure supports a renewal and growth plan that includes planting more than 800ha this year, along with a progressive rollout over the next five years through additional renewal and expansion investments. This would give a production volume of 62,000 tonnes in 2026, scaling up across the next few years.

Camposol already has year-round programmes in place with a number of European retailers, but with its proprietary varieties, it will be able to deliver a higher level of consistency to the final consumer. ‘Our model is based on unlocking Peru’s full potential and making the most of the competitive advantages we enjoy in order to provide a continuous year-round supply to our customers,” Naranjo told Fruitnet.

For now, the volume of plants coming through is enough to meet the company’s own varietal renewal requirements, but further ahead, it plans to find strategic partners to grow and market its varieties.

“This approach allows us to consolidate a single-origin business model from Peru, with a stable and consistent year-round supply, leveraging the competitive advantages of Peru’s coastal valleys together with the attributes delivered by the Origen programme,” Naranjo said.

According to Federico Maggio, Camposol’s operations manager, the two new varieties have been very well received by the company’s main customers, prompting the company to channel additional resources into scaling up their production.

Camposol plans to launch at least one other new variety from its genetic improvement programme this year with further new offerings coming on stream in the years ahead.
