UK National Fruit Show

The viability of the UK moving towards 50 per cent self-sufficiency in fruits and vegetables will be among the topics tackled at the country’s National Fruit Show 2011, which will take place in Kent from 19-20 October.

Now in its 78th year, the two-day industry showcase, will feature fruit competitions including dessert apples and pears, culinary varieties, apple juice, soft fruit and nuts. This year, for the first time, members of the public will help decide the country’s tastiest apple.

UK agriculture and food minister Jim Paice will chair a debate on 19 October, which will focus on the sustainability and “food security as the industry targets a 50 per cent market share” of British fresh produce sales.

In a statement, organisers the Marden Fruit Show Society said participants would discuss whether the sector is equipped to reach this target and whether there is “government will” for ensuring food security.

Scientists and industry specialists will also debate whether there is the technology, innovation and varieties available to move towards UK self sufficiency.

Sarah Calcutt, chair of the society, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for growers to openly discuss the current political climate and the financial constraints placed upon the industry as a whole. We hope to generate a strong message about what is required in the future to ensure a vibrant, profitable source of safe produce for UK consumers.”
