Spanish interprofessional organisation Hortyfruta has joined forces with associations across Europe to urge the EU to give producer organisations “real power” to stabilise markets rather than just acting as observers.

Hortyfruta and the other interprofessional groups have put together a proposal, to be presented to the European Commission and the European Parliament, which it claims will “stimulate and improve” their functions and be able to take action to stablise the market during times of crisis.

The organisation said there was an urgent need for Europe-wide action to change current legislation to enable industry bodies, such as Hortyfruta, to halt “continuous drops in prices”, which it said happened “season after season” and were “choking the income of growers”.

“Hortyfruta calls for clear and ambitious European legislation that fosters the operations of interprofessional organisations in all member states,” the group said.

“The legislation should ensure that the organisations work with efficient operating standards, which not only grant them the status of observers of the situation in the sector, but would also give them authorisation to be real actors.”
