The scab-resistant variety is the ideal apple to kick off the season, says developer Fresh Forward

A new scab-resistant apple variety developed by Fresh Forward made its official debut last week. Wursixo is a pink-red striped bi-coloured apple that gives medium sized fruit with a fresh, sweet-acid taste that will be sold under the brand name Kick!. The variety is scab-resistant, mildew-tolerant, and moderately susceptible to fruit tree cancer.

“It can be harvested as early as mid-August, about three to four weeks earlier than Gala, making it a scab-resistant alternative to Delcorf and an ideal apple to kick off the season,” Fresh Forward said.

“A key focus in cultivation is achieving a balanced growth of young plantings as quickly as possible to minimise potential stress-related issues such as biennial bearing and watercore.”

The variety was launch under the slogan “Kick! off your Season” at an event hosted by Fresh Forward and TreeQuattro in Huissen, Netherlands. Along with the joint unveiling of the brand by Fresh Forward and TreeQuattro, the first Dutch Kick! Growers, Baars and Uijtterwaal carried out a symbolic kick to kickstart the new campaign.

Since 2021, the Wursixo variety has been available under the brand name Eden in Norway, where there are currently 30ha of production. According to Fresh Forward, the first commercial Kick! plantings will shortly get underway across the UK and European Union.

“The trees are now available through an open concept and can be ordered via TreeQuattro. Any grower can plant the trees and use the Kick! logo without additional fees. A one-time license fee per tree will be invoiced through TreeQuattro,” Fresh Forward said.
