Today they are one of the ten most consumed fruits in the US

US mango consumption has almost doubled from 1.9lbs per person in 2005 to 3.5lb in 2024, making it one of the fastest-growing fruits in the country. The figures were released by the National Mango Board (NMB), which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
The NMB was set up in 2005 to increase mango consumption in the US by educating consumers about the flavour, nutrition, and culture of mangoes through advertising and in-store promotions.
“In celebration of our 20th anniversary, we’re highlighting two decades of growth, research and impact in advancing America’s love for mangoes,” the NMB said. “What began in 2005 as a mission to increase mango consumption in the US has become a remarkable success story for one of the fastest-growing fruits in the country.”
In that time, US mango imports have increased by 255 per cent, from US$262mn in 2005 to US$929mn in 2024. Today, more than 130mn cartons of mangoes are imported into the US annually.
According to the NMB, in 2024, the ROI on promotions made on mangoes reached16 per cent, meaning that for every dollar the industry has invested in NMB promotional programmes during the past 10 years, the industry has gained US$16 in return.
The NMB website attracts over 2.5mn visits each year, featuring recipes, research, education and interactive content.
“In 20 years, over 40 nutrition and health studies and 100+ production/post-harvest studies have been completed, advancing both consumer awareness and industry innovation” the board said.
Looking ahead, the NMB said it would continue to drive research, education and promotional efforts to “keep mangoes top of mind for consumers, retailers and the broader produce industry”.
