Michoacán Strip Avocado PGI covers 31 municipalities with a long tradition of growing Hass avocados
Hass avocados grown in a specific part of the state of Michoacán in Mexico now have their own Protected Geographical Indicator.

As published in the Official Gazette of the Mexican Federation, Aguacate Franja Michoacán (Michoacán Strip Avocado) has been designated as having unique qualities thanks to the geographic, climatic and human conditions in the area it is produced.
The protected geographic area comprises 31 municipalities in Michoacán, where avocado cultivation is part of an agricultural tradition with documented history dating back to the 19th century. Over time, this activity has evolved from traditional practices to a consolidated agro-industry, integrating specialised techniques for cultivation, harvesting, selection, and packaging.
In a statement, the government said the Michoacán Strip Avocado is distinguished by its physical and sensory characteristics, including its oval shape, rough skin, creamy pulp, and high oil content – attributes that have contributed to its recognition in the culinary and commercial sectors, both nationally and internationally.
Speaking at the inauguration of the PGI, the secretary of economy, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, said: “We received instructions from President Claudia Sheinbaum to support the economic development of the state of Michoacán, and Geographical Indications are an important tool for this, as they contribute to generating a social economy and align with the vision of the federal government’s economic project”.
He said he hoped the Michoacán Strip Avocado PGI would be a catalyst for strengthening not only the regional economy but also the national economy.
The director general of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), Vidal Llerenas, said awarding the PGI to the state government, producers, and packers was an important recognition of this product due to its special characteristics, saying “it has its own unique roots, incorporates technology, and has the capacity to be exported, giving it greater value and visibility both nationally and internationally compared to other products of its kind. This also positions the state of Michoacán as a leader in avocado production and cultivation”.
