Hermanos Fernández López, the Spanish subsidiary of Italian-owned importer Orsero Group known more commonly as Fernández, has acquired a new logistics and distribution platform in Vigo, Galicia, as it looks to consolidate its expansion in the Iberian Peninsula and improve logistics operations at major Atlantic coast ports.

The acquisition includes a 5,000 m² warehouse – which Orsero described as “ideal” for improving operational capacity and service to large-scale retailers in north-west Spain and Portugal – as well as two stores in the Vigo fruit and vegetable market.

With the investment, the company said it intended to make use of connections with the ports of Vigo, Marín, and Porto, and ensure more efficient and sustainable coverage for its customers.

The investment could apparently triple its current turnover in the region, which currently stands at around €12 million.

“This transaction represents a key milestone in our journey, strengthening our presence on the peninsula and laying the foundation for future investments and developments in the region,” said Feliciano Freiria, CEO of Fernández.

Growth plan

In the initial phase, the facilities will offer ripening capacity of 9,000 tonnes per year for Canary Island bananas, a figure the company said it planned to double to 18,000 tonnes in the future.

According to the group, the centre’s technical infrastructure includes:

• Refrigeration storage capacity for 600 tonnes, with the possibility to extend to over 800 tonnes.

• Packaging rooms spanning more than 1,000 m² equipped with cutting-edge technology to meet large-scale retail standards.

• Two locations in Vigo wholesale market.

The acquisition is seen not only as addressing a need for more space, but also as a boost for “production efficiency and value creation”.
