Fresh produce supplier Mack Multiples has become the first group to introduce a new California-grown table grape variety, Pristine, to the UK market.
The group has announced this week that it has taken on the first commercial volumes of this year's exported crop, having worked closely with Pristine breeder and grower Anton Caratan and with Darrel Fulmer of Sunfresh International, the owner of the variety's marketing rights.
The late season white grape was initially developed to fill a niche in the US market, hence the large size and crunchy texture – characteristics traditionally favoured by US consumers.
According to Mack, it is now conducting research into the grape's potential and, if successful, will look at introducing the Pristine variety to its growers across the world.
