In Spain, Fepex’s Cherry Committee has offered a positive assessment of the past season, both in terms of volumes and prices.

The committee, comprising representatives from the main production areas, revealed an 11 per cent increase in exports when compared with 2024, coming in at 43,604 tonnes.

Figures compiled by the Department of Customs and Special Taxes Department and processed by Fepex showed that export value jumped 38 per cent year-on-year to €188mn.

The meeting also addressed the terms and conditions of agricultural insurance, which are considered “insufficient or ill-suited” to the needs of cherry production and marketing.

This is leading to lower enrolment rates, Fepex said, and the Committee raised the need for improvements to the policy.

Cherry producers and marketers also discussed potential promotional activities in destination markets such as China.

They anticipate that, once the export protocol to China is finalised in August, exports can begin for the next season, Fepex added.
