According to ICA, negotiations were concluded in less than a year

The Uruguayan government has given the green light to the entry of fresh Hass avocados from Colombia, after successfully completing technical and phytosanitary evaluations.

From now on, interested Colombian exporters must apply for Phytosanitary Entry Authorisation to begin commercial shipments.

The Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) said this latest market opening reaffirms the confidence of trading partners in the country’s sanitary control system.

“This achievement was reached in record time, as negotiations began on 22 May 2025, and in less than a year, Colombia secured market access for this product in the Republic of Uruguay,” said ICA’s general manager Paula Andrea Cepeda.

The opening of the Uruguayan market comes during a period of sustained growth for Colombia’s avocado industry. As of November 2025, exports stood at 147,013 tonnes, an increase of 46.6 per cent on the year-earlier period.

During the same period, the country certified more than 773 farms in Good Agricultural Practices, a fundamental requirement for exporting.

“This announcement confirms that opening international markets for Colombian agriculture is a wise decision and that in 2026 the sector will continue to be an engine of the country’s economic growth,” Cepeda said.
