Israeli exporter Agriver showcased its new supplies of salicornia, known as samphire on the UK market, at Fruit Logistica.

The eco-friendly product, grown in salt water in the desert by Agriver, is currently supplied to a Dutch client, complementing the firm’s substantial herb offer.

“Salicornia is healthy, tasty and great for cooking with fish,” said the firm’s Omer Kamp. “It is also grown in an environment-friendly way.”

Agriver is still boosting its pomegranate volumes to the UK, despite the difficult economy. “We are in a really good position,” said the firm’s David Levin. “There is still growth in this product - we grew by 20 per cent in 2008.”

The quality of this season’s Israeli pomegranate crop has been excellent, said Levin, and Agriver is continuing its joint venture with Israeli and Indian research facilities.

“We are also expanding into other fresh-cut fruits, such as coconut and mango,” he added.
