Co-op has launched ‘Second Chance Saver Bags’ in a trial with Deliveroo to offer online shoppers cut-price fruit and veg and help reduce food waste.

As part of the pilot, £3 ‘mystery’ produce bags can be ordered on Deliveroo from 20 selected stores in London, Brighton, Manchester and other towns and cities across the UK. Co-op said that if the trial is successful, it will be rolled out further across its estate.

The bags contain fruit and veg that could otherwise go to waste but is still perfectly good to eat. In each bag there is a mix of six to eight different fruits and vegetables, with an original value of £5-£32, depending on the items included.

Items may include: Irresistible Best of British Tomatoes, Fairtrade Organic Bananas, Irresistible Strawberries, Tenderstem Broccoli, Irresistible Baking Potatoes, or Co-op’s Sweet and Crunchy Salad.

Kate McCrae, Co-op’s retail director, said: “Saving money, eating healthily and reducing food waste are all important matters to our member owners and our Second Chance Saver Bags will help shoppers to do all three with ease.

“We’re extremely proud to be pioneering this new initiative exclusively with Deliveroo and look forward to seeing the response from our members and customers that shop with us through the platform.”

The trial forms part of Co-op’s wider commitment to halve food waste by 2030. As a signatory to Wrap’s Food Waste Reduction Roadmap, the retailer said it is committed to cutting food waste and supports members and customers to reduce waste at home.

Co-op already works with Felix (formerly FareShare & Felix Project), City Harvest, The Bread & Butter Thing, Company Shop, and hundreds of community groups via Caboodle to tackle food waste and ensure surplus food benefits local communities.
