Preventing Panama Disease from spreading to Latin America was the one of the key topics discussed during the first day of the VI World Banana Summit which takes place this week in Guayaquil.

Speaking on the first day of the event, Patricio Almeida of Ecuadorean food safety agency Agrocalidad said so far there had been no reported cases on the continent of the disease which has spread to China, Australia and the Middle East.

He noted that the three most important ways of preventing it entering Latin America were by banning imports of agricultural inputs, disinfecting the footwear of visitors arriving from affected zones and disinfecting containers arriving at ports.

Preparing for the arrival of El Niño was another important topic up for discussion at the summit.
