Sales of imported products, foodstuffs and other basics have risen in Vietnam, while luxury items dropped off as high inflation hits home for consumers, according to Thanh Nien Daily.

Customer numbers shopping at supermarkets also rose by 10-30 per cent in the first half of this year, reflecting the drop in price differences between supermarkets and other suppliers to less than 3 per cent.

The data was released at a recent consumer trends conference run by the Centre for Business Studies and Assistance in Ho Chi Minh City.

The sale of Vietnamese products fell 5 per cent over the same time last year, while imported products rose 20-30 per cent with further growth predicted.

Revenues from the sale of fresh and processed food and milk products rose 40-50 per cent in the first half of 2008.

Inflation in Vietnam is one of the highest in Asia, and hit 25.2 per cent in May. GDP, however, has averaged more than 8 per cent over the last five years.
