Vietnam’s Delta province of Tien Giang successfully exported eight different fruit products to South Korea for the first time in January after two years’ effort by the region’s centre for export promotion, reports Vietnamnet.

Le Quang Ninh, head of the centre said Lo Ren star apple, Hoa Loc mango, Chu mango, Cho Gao dragonfruit, small-seeded longan, Ngu Hiep durian and green-skinned pomelo had been introduced to South Korea last month.

'We chose to promote these fruits because most of them are cultivated under the GlobalGap standard,' Mr Ninh said, adding that the fruits were also exported to Russia and Japan.

The US and Germany are two other international markets now importing the Delta’s fruits, he added.

“South Korea is a market with high potential, but it has thus far only imported fresh rambutan from Tien Giang,” Mr Ninh said.

Phan Quoc Nam, director of the centre, said the idea of promoting fruit exports from the delta came to him when he saw farmers having to sell their fruits at low prices because of competition from Thai and Chinese imports.

'I asked myself why can't I take advantage of the opportunity to promote the delta's fruits to overseas markets to help farmers increase their income,' Mr Nam told Vietnamnet.
