The citrus industry in Western Australia expects its production will double over the next five years, according to the ABC.
By 2012 it is forecast to fill the state’s domestic market and force growers to look for export opportunities.
“We’ll have excess supply and we’ll need some growers and firms to start seriously considering being export-oriented companies,” said citrus industry development officer Nathan Hancock.
“Due to our proximity to South East Asia, that’s where we’ll look first. The markets we’ll probably target are Thailand, Singapore, those sorts of markets.”
The West Australian citrus season runs from June to September.
