The port of Hamburg, Germany’s largest port, recorded an increase in non-containerised cargo volumes of 4.1 per cent in the first six months of 2008 compared with the same period in 2007.

Non-containerised volumes rose to 1.5m tonnes, according to the port, with tropical fruits accounting for the bulk of imports, at 387,000 tonnes.

Overall, volumes handled at the port increased to 71m tonnes, with container handling rising to 5m TEU (20-foot equivalent units).

In a press release, the port attributed its continuing success to its specialised port service companies and its outstanding geographical location, which have allowed it to become the international trading hub of global transport chains in northern Europe.
