Hass avocados

Hass predominates in Spain

Avocado output in Spain has increased year on year by six per cent, according to an association that represents growers in Malaga.

Asaja-Malaga spokesman Benjamín Faulí said output had increased this season to 46,700 tonnes. Fruit is grown in the Axarquía area of the province of Malaga which is renowned for its tropical lines and the season runs from September to May.

The main variety in production is Hass with output reaching 34,500 tonnes and green-skinned types account for 12,200t.
Sizes have been smaller however due to higher temperatures last spring than usual and earnings fell by some three per cent to €56 million.

The UK is the second export market after France for Spanish avocados.
