A new starch-based packaging film from Sirane Ltd. is set to be displayed for the first time at the Pro2Pac Exhibition in London during March, with the product geared towards an overall reduction in packaging for the customer.

The new Siraflex is a fully-compostable film available in a range of styles and thicknesses, from 30 to 200 microns, and can be used in all areas of packaging for lidding, pouches, wraps or bags, according to the group director Simon Balderson.

Siraflex was created to meet demand for compostable packaging from UK retailers in particular, he said, with the aim of filling a gap that had thus far been filled by thicker, less flexible compostable films and oxy-based polymer packaging such as polyactide (PLA)-based materials.

'Recycling has its place – once the overall infrastructure is sorted out –but Marks & Spencer, Waitrose, J Sainsbury and others are all keeping packaging compostability firmly in their sights,' Mr Balderson explained. 'Siraflex has accordingly been created in response to the gap in demand and will, we believe, offer a true packaging composting solution at a very competitive cost.'

Meanwhile, research and development of new products is not taking a backseat despite the current economic environment, with Sirane actively seeking partnerships with packaging companies whose innovative performance is under threat from the credit crunch.

'At Sirane, our commitment to innovation is paramount and our commercial leanness and fitness is thankfully in good shape,' Mr Balderson added.
