In Catalonia, 36 schools have just introduced organic and Fairtrade food to their school menus.

Altogether 17 organisations, including parent associations, consumer cooperatives, social organisations and district administrators, have set up a “Local Round Table for Organic School Meals”.

The aim of these organisations is to promote the use of high quality organic food from the region and to increase awareness among families of food issues.

One organisation, Fundación Futuro (Future Trust), is managing 13 nursery schools and primary schools in the province of Barcelona in the current school year 2008/09. Some 4,000 schoolchildren, teachers and employees in the province have already benefited.

In addition, the Round Table is preparing a manual to assist other schools in converting their canteens.
