Asda has began a nationwide tour on Friday, to promote the benefits of fresh fruit and healthy eating.

The 'Back to Basics' roadshow aims to encourage shoppers to sample new and different types of fresh produce as part of the government's 5-a-day initiative.

The 'kids friendly' tour, which began in Pudsey, will visit all 260 Asda stores throughout the UK during July and August. Each event will see an appearance of the 5-a-day fruity gang – Marcel Melon, Olivia Orange, Strawberry Sue, Patsy Peach and Alex Apple.

Sue Malcolm, Asda nutritionist, said: 'Unfortunately a lot of people are still confused about what counts as a portion of fruit and veg. So to help educate our customers we are introducing a 5-a-day label on our packs is encouraging families to go back to basics and eat more fresh fruit.' During the tour, Asda produce colleagues will encourage customer to sample thing they wouldn't normally try, such as melons, mangoes and pineapples. Malcolm added: 'We have recruited an elite team of fruit samplers to tour the country, spreading a fun, healthy message to our customers, both young and old.'
