Asda chief executive Andy Clarke has been appointed as president of the IGD and will take over the role in the new year.

Clarke, who has been vice-president of the grocery research body for two years, replaces president of Mars UK Fiona Dawson. He will hold the position for two years.

'In my 30 years in this industry I've never known a period as challenging and exciting as we're currently in,” said Clarke. “The pace of change is phenomenal and the UK is leading the way in many areas. The IGD makes a real difference to our sector and to the UK economy – be it through our output, job creation or skills – and I'm hugely proud to have the opportunity to lead it.'

IGD chief executive Joanne Denney-Finch said Clarke bought a wealth of experience “from shop floor to top floor”.

“Andy now takes the reins as president in what is set to be a very exciting year for IGD and our industry, as we focus on our core pillars of people development and working towards a secure and sustainable future, ultimately delivering the needs of the public,” she said.

She added: “I would also like to extend many thanks to our outgoing President Fiona Dawson, for what she has helped us achieve over the last two years.”

Clarke continued: “I am delighted to take on the mantle of IGD President and continue the fantastic work that Fiona, Joanne and the team have delivered.”
