France is one of the man destinations for Algarve citrus exports
The Citrinos do Algarve (Algarve Citrus) PGI is organising a tasting at the world’s biggest fresh produce market, Rungis International Market in Paris on 27 November.

The action is part of the PGI’s promotional campaign, organised by the Association of Citrus Producers of the Algarve (AlgarOrange), which focuses on the key markets of France, Spain, Germany and Canada. It will run until December 2026.
“France is a strategic partner for Algarve Citrus PGI. Being at Rungis means being at the heart of European food distribution; it means directly showcasing the excellence and quality that characterise our production,” said José Oliveira, president of AlgarOrange.
Under the slogan ‘Savour the flavour. Feel the sun’, the new campaign invites consumers to taste oranges, tangerines, clementines and lemons produced in the Algarve – Portugal’s main citrus producing region and one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations.
Almost 87 per cent of Portugal’s citrus production is located in this region, which has seen steady increase in productivity in recent years thanks to efficient resource management and investments in innovation and technology. According to AlgarOrange, production for the 2023/24 season exceeded 64,000 tonnes, the highest figure for a decade.
France is one of the main destinations for Algarve citrus exports. In 2024, sales in this market exceeded €55mn, up 7 per cent on the previous year. According to AlgarOrange, citrus sold under the quality seal is distinguished by its “thin, colourful, and shiny peel, high juice content, and sweet flavour, with a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity”.
Rungis is home to more than 1,200 companies on 234ha and handles 1.8mn tonnes of food products a year.
