Viladegut, who replaces outgoing president Montse Baró, will hold the post for four years.

Announcing a new board structure, Afrucat said Baró, of Baró e Hijos, will replace Ignasi Argilés, of Nufri as vice president, while Joan Serentill, of Fruilar, will remain as secretary of the association.

Viladegut, who was already a member of the Afrucat board, described the new position as a personal challenge and a privilege.

He said the 2030 Agenda represents a significant challenge for fruit growing and that plantations will need to adapt significantly to climate change and the current labour shortages, adding that he believed the future of the Catalan fruit sector lies in the automation, modernisation, and digitalisation of farms.

“Another challenge lies in the lack of active ingredients, which jeopardizes the ability to produce with the quality and volume that markets require,” Viladegut said.

Regarding consumer promotions, Viladegut pointed out that Afrucat should continue its path of bringing production closer to citizens through projects such as Cosmofruita, which seek the participation of new generations of consumers.
