More than 370,000 tonnes of cherries were exported from the terminal in 2024/25
The volume of fruit shipped through Terminal Pacífico Sur (TPS) at Chile’s Valparaíso port grew 18 per cent during the 2024/25 season according to Mundo Marítimo. A total of 1.24 tonnes of fruit was shipped in refrigerated containers between November and May, with cherries and grapes leading the charge.
Overall, 374,854 tonnes of cherries were shipped in reefer containers, a 67 per cent increase on the 225,005 tonnes transported in 2023/24. Grape shipments totalled 294,765 tonnes, with nectarines in third place at 235,217 tonnes.
More than 50 per cent of shipments (534,123 tonnes) went to Asia. Europe was the second destination, with shipments totalling 198,000 tonnes, an increase of 53 per cent on the previous season, and the East Coast of the US was third with 140,000 tonnes. Shipments to the Middle East doubled in volume, going from more than 10,000 tonnes in 2023/24 to 20,445 tonnes.
Cristian Rodríguez, general manager of TPS, commented: “This fruit and vegetable export season saw significant increases in the transferred volumes of most products moved through our terminal, led by cherries, whose main destination is Asia.
“This is undoubtedly a major challenge for us and for the entire logistics chain at the Port of Valparaíso, which motivates us to continue striving for operational excellence to offer the best service to our customers and Chilean foreign trade.”
