The Egyptian agriculture minister, Ezz el Din Abu Steet, has revealed that fresh strawberry exports to Europe will no longer be subject to additional examination procedures, following a review by the European Commission.
The EU took the decision after ensuring the safety of Egypt’s new quarantine procedures, adopted to guarantee high-quality agricultural crops suitable for both domestic consumption exports.
Abu Steet said that the agriculture ministry was in communication with various countries to highlight Egypt’s quarantine procedures, with the goal of opening up new markets for Egyptian products.
Strawberry exports from Egypt totalled 28,000 tonnes in 2017/18 at a value of US$63m. The EU accounted for 11,000 tonnes, at a value of US$35m, according to the head of the Agricultural Export Council, Hamid el Demerdash.
