Fruit imports in particular registered notable growth through the January-February period, according to Fepex
Spanish imports of fresh fruits and vegetables recorded year-on-year growth in both volume and value for the January-February period.
That is according to new data from the Department of Customs and Excise, processed by Fepex.
Fresh produce import volume climbed 5 per cent to 732,261 tonnes, while value increased 11 per cent to €889.5mn.
According to Fepex, fruit imports saw notable growth, with a 12 per cent increase in volume and a 20 per cent rise in value to 331,494 tons and €577mn respectively.
Bananas was the most-imported category, followed by kiwifruit, which saw a huge jump in both volume and value to 30,891 tonnes (up 110 per cent) and €59mn (up 124 per cent).
Avocado imports also stood out, Fepex said, with 41 per cent growth in imported volume and an 18 per cent increase in value, reaching 34,575 tonnes and €78mn.
In the vegetable segment, imported volumes were similar to the opening two months of 2024, coming in at 400,767 tonnes (down 0.4 per cent) and €312mn (down 3 per cent).
Potatoes remained the most imported product, representing 65 per cent of all vegetables and 35 per cent of the entire fresh produce sector.
Potato imports amounted to 256,219 tonnes in value (up 2 per cent) and €113mn (down 4 per cent), Fepex added.
