International geopolitical instability, and particularly the conflict in the Middle East, is creating increasing uncertainty for the prepared fruit and vegetable sector in Spain.

According to estimates from the Spanish Association of Washed Ready-to-Use Fruits and Vegetables (Afhorfresh), costs associated with the production and distribution of minimally processed fruits and vegetables have increased 5 per cent in recent weeks.

”Increasing volatility” has been observed in costs related to fuel, fertiliser, plastic materials, energy, and other inputs necessary for the production and distribution of minimally processed products, which have in turn pushed up production costs.

This impact varies depending on the specific circumstances of each operator, Afhorfresh noted.

”The prepared fruit and vegetable sector, also known as ready-to-eat (IV Range) produce, is one of the most affected by the widespread price fluctuations in inputs,” Fepex outlined.

”These products are fresh, washed, cut, and packaged, ready for consumption, and their production requires highly specialised industrial processes and efficient logistics to guarantee freshness and a continuous supply.

”These characteristics make the sector particularly sensitive to changes in energy prices and the materials needed for packaging and logistics,” it said.

Despite the current challenges, the companies in the sector – grouped under Afhorfresh – are taking ”all possible measures” to mitigate these effects, Fepex pointed out.

Afhorfresh, a member of Fepex, represents more than 95 per cent of the market for the category in Spain.
