Members of the Korean Melon Union visited Murcia to learn more about the region’s melon production

Murcia Korean melon visit

Murcian grower-exporter association Proexport hosted a visit from 21 South Korean melon producers this week as part of an academic and agronomic programme to learn about the region’s melon production.

Members of the Korean Melon Union business group, led by its president, Lee Juh-Yun, were welcomed by José Cánovas Ruiz, president of Proexport’s melon and watermelon sector. Cánovas said: “We are delighted to share our experience with our Korean colleagues. As melon producers and marketers, we are also interested in learning from farmers and agricultural companies from other parts of the world who, like us, face the challenge of feeding millions of consumers”.

Lee commented: “The objective of our visit is to learn firsthand about the best agricultural practices and biotechnological innovation carried out by Murcian producers, as their good reputation in these areas is recognised and appreciated globally”.

The visit included presentations at Proexport’s offices in Murcia on the productive, agronomic, varietal, and commercial aspects of melon cultivation in the Region of Murcia, Spain, and Europe given by Cánovas, Proexport’s director Fernando Gómez and its head of agricultural sustainability, Loli Molina.

The Korean delegation also had a chance to visit Murcian partner company Melones El Abuelo, a Proexport partner company, to see the selection, handling, packaging, quality control, and logistics process for the Piel de Sapo melon.

The company’s quality director, Pilar Teruel, noted that “this variety is very important in the Region of Murcia, where farmers historically take advantage of the climatic conditions and their agronomic knowledge to obtain top-quality fruit with a very sweet flavour and crunchy texture”.
