Volume of fresh produce exports to Europe climbed 1 per cent in the first quarter, with value rising 9 per cent

Spanish exports of fresh fruits and vegetables to Europe stood at 3.3mn tonnes in the opening quarter of 2025, representing year-on-year growth of 1 per cent.

This is according to data from the Department of Customs and Excise, processed by Fepex.

European exports made up 98 per cent of the country’s overall fresh produce shipments for the three-month period, which totalled 3.4mn tonnes.

In value terms, exports to Europe brought in €5.59bn, some 98 per cent of the total €5.702bn and 9 per cent more than in the same period of 2024.

Within Europe, Spain’s main export market remains the EU, where 2.8mn tonnes of fresh produce were sold in January-March – 1 per cent more than last year.

This accounted for 83 per cent of Spain’s total exports, 

In value, sales to the EU reached €4.587bn, up 10 per cent, and represented 80 per cent of the overall value.

By country, Germany, France, and the UK were the top export destinations, followed by the Netherlands, Portugal, and Italy.

Fresh fruit and vegetable sales to Germany in the first quarter reached 982,876 tonnes, up 1 per cent compared to the same period in 2024, for a value of €1.693bn (up 11 per cent).

Exports to France amounted to 584,331 tonnes (up 4 per cent) and €836.5mn (up 11 per cent), and to the UK – the largest non-EU market for the Spanish sector – they totalled 408,662 tonnes (up 2 per cent) and €786mn (up 8 per cent).

Shipments to the Netherlands rose to 291,743 tonnes (up 2 per cent) and €507mn (up 8 per cent) and to Portugal fell 5 per cent to 198,027 tonnes and €216mn.

Italy ranked sixth on the lit of Spain’s export markets, with 145,579 tonnes (down 5 per cent) and €246mn.
