Output topped 100,000 tonnes for the first time in 2024/25 as exports continue to climb
Spanish grapefruit production exceeded 100,000 tonnes for the first time in 2024/25, reaching 102,000 tonnes between 1 September and 31 May.
The increase, which was due to new acreage and favourable climatic conditions, represent a milestone for a sector that has seen sustained and strategic growth in recent years.
Around 72,000 tonnes of the crop was exported with 80 per cent of shipments going to six European markets: Germany, France, the Netherlands, Poland, the UK and Switzerland.
Around 22,000 tonnes went for processing and 6,000 tonnes was sold on the domestic market.
Spain now supplies 50 per cent of the grapefruit consumed in the EU, up from 36 per cent in 2020/21. The past few years has seen a steady reduction in imports from Turkey, Israel and the US, while the quality and consistency of Spanish grapefruit has continued to improve.
Unlike other more volatile crops, grapefruit has been consistently profitable for Spanish growers, thanks to stable demand and the sector’s strong differentiation policy.
