Harvested production of cherries in Switzerland is expected to increase to around 2,400 tonnes this season, according to the Swiss Fruit Association.

The group said weather conditions in the run-up to this year’s harvest had been “favourable” for growing high-quality fruit, leading to a bumper crop.

“The trees are laden with fruit,” it said in a press release. “At 2,400 tonnes, a successful cherry harvest is anticipated. By comparison, 2,250 tonnes were harvested last year.”

The first cherries are already being picked in some parts of the country, it added, with the main harvesting period scheduled to begin in the middle of June.

“Thanks to various varieties with different ripening times, Swiss cherries will be available until the end of July,” the association added.
