Japanese seed company Sakata showcased its new dual-resistant baby plum tomato Saiko Star at Fruit attraction in Madrid.

The variety, which had its first commercial season last year, boasts resistance to both ToBRFV and Cladosporium, as well as a long shelf life, and consistent flavour. In this respect, it “hits the sweet spot”, says Wilko Kamerling, senior product manager at Sakata EMEA.

Saiko Star, with its vivid red colour and crisp crunch, has been developed for Moroccan production, from November to June, however it is also being trialled by some premium growers in Spain.

This winter the variety will account for about 12 per cent of Moroccan baby plum production and it is seeing “good uptake” from UK retailers, according to Kamerling.
