Port of Los Angeles US

April containerised cargo volumes at the Port of Los Angeles decreased by 6.1 per cent compared to the year-earlier period, reaching 662,973 TEUs.

The port authority said the fall was due to “a particularly robust April 2014 as importers advanced inventory due to concerns about labour negotiations later in the year”. Additionally there were vessel alliance uncertainties this April as shipping lines continue to return to their transpacific rotations, the port stated.

For the first four months of 2015 overall volumes are down 5.3 per cent on last year at 2.49m TEUs. Imports fell by 9.9 per cent from 364,126 TEUs in April 2014 to 328,140 TEUs this April. Exports were down 15.8 per cent from 172,945 TEUs last year to 145,655 TEUs in April 2015. Combined, total loaded imports and exports decreased by 11.8 per cent from 537,071 TEUs to 473,796 TEUs. Factoring in empties, which increased by 12 per cent, overall April 2015 volumes were down 6.1 per cent.
