APM Terminals, the Netherlands-based terminal arm of Danish logistics giant AP Moller-Maersk, has relocated its American headquarters to a new US$450m facility in Portsmouth, US.

16 senior staff have already made the move to the terminal, which was launched in July 2007 and covers 93ha off of the Western Freeway in Virginia.

Spokeswoman Allison Enedy confirmed that the move was taking place: 'The decision to relocate our senior staff and key decision makers is part of our overall strategy for long-term growth,' she told local media. 'It made good sense to have corporate management on-site at a terminal that showcases the very best in innovation and stewardship.'

Joe Harris, spokesman for the Virginia Port Authority, welcomed the move as a positive one for the state.

'Overall, I think its good for the region and good for the state,' he said. 'Even if there's been a downturn in shipping and everyone's singing the blues about numbers and profits, it will not last forever and that is something we have to keep in perspective.'
