Oranges

The Chilean Fresh Fruit Association (CFFA) has announced the launch of a nationwide promotion campaign to support the entry of Chilean Navel oranges onto the US market for the first time this summer.

To help spread the word, CFFA is working with greengrocers and food personalities across the US to develop TV and in-store video segments featuring Navel oranges.

A release announcing the new arrivals along with easy recipes and usage ideas for summer citrus will also be sent to print and online media outlets.

“Navel oranges are not new to consumers, and while traditionally thought of as a winter fruit, they are natural in healthful summer meals and as a refreshing snack,” said CFFA managing director Tom Tjerandsen in a press release.

According to CFFA, Chilean growers have been careful to ship fruit with high brix (sweetness) levels that appeal to US buyers. Already, receivers have reportedly been impressed with the color, appearance and sweetness of the first containers.

Overall, the trade expects an excellent inaugural season from Chile this year. Early estimates suggest Chile will ship between 600,000-800,000 cartons of Navel oranges to the US during 2009, with total exports exceeding 40,000 tonnes.

Throughout the season, Chile will ship 15kg cartons of Navels sized 40 to 88, including the popular 56, 48 and 40 sized fruit.
