New legislation has been proposed by lawmakers in California with the intention of boosting the amount of water available to fruit, vegetable, nut and dairy producers in the US state.

The bill, which is being sponsored by the state's two senators and two members of the House of Representatives, is designed to make it easier for the US Bureau Reclamation to approve transfers between water sellers and buyers in the San Joaquin Valley.

The Valley, a rich source of fresh produce, has experienced low rainfall over the past three years, and, combined with court-ordered restrictions on pumping water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, have led to shortages.

Californian Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has said that he will veto hundreds of bills unless lawmakers agree to legislation allowing changes to the State's water supply system, according to the Associated Press.

'I made it very clear to the legislators and to the leaders that ifthis does not get done, then I will veto a lot of their legislation, alot of their bills, so that should inspire them to go and get the jobdone,' Schwarzenegger said in a speech to community college officialsin San Francisco.
