China’s inflation hit a 34-month high in May, with food leading the charge at 11.7 per cent higher than the same time a year earlier.
Pork was one of the main culprits, but after a dip in April vegetable prices shot up again in late May, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The overall consumer price index (CPI) reached 5.5 per cent over the month, the NBS told local media. Food prices account for round one third of China’s CPI.
In an effort to rein in inflation, China’s central bank has raised interest rates four times since last October.
