New food safety guidelines could be released by the Indian government within a month, according to the country’s Food Processing Minister Subodh Kant Sahai, who also called on developed countries to build a global food standard, according to The Hindu.
“We have consulted other countries before formulating the guidelines. We hope the norms to be in place in a month,” said Mr Sahai on Thursday at a global food regulatory summit run by the Confederation of Indian Industry.
He said if Indian safety standards needed upgrading, the country was able to do so: “If we have to correct, we are ready to correct.”
Mr Sahai called on developed countries to take a lead in formulating a global food standard to simplify international trade.
“They say (developed countries) it is a horrible law (Indian regulation). When we go, their laws differ from country to country and even from state to state. Give us a uniform law so that we can trade accordingly,” Mr Sahai said.
