The Chinese market will play a bigger part in Japanese retailer Aeon’s portfolio in the coming years, according to the company, with a new 90,000m2 shopping mall in Beijing serving as Aeon’s flagship.

The new mall will open on 7 November in central Beijing, with 104 shops and parking for 3,000 cars, according to JCN Network. A trial operation of the mall in mid-October drew 100,000 customers.

China’s retail market is becoming more attractive to Aeon as its sales in Japan decline, echoing similar moves by other global giants like Walmart and Carrefour. Aeon hopes to increase its current 25 stores to 100 in the next five years.

Kazumasa Ishii, president of Beijing Aeon Co, said the new mall might shift out Aeon’s store in Qingdao, the best-selling Jusco branch in the world.

“Some 1.16m people live within 15 minutes drive from the mall, and the area has more room for development,” he said. “We hope our new outlet will beat the Qingdao store in sales.”
