The World Bank will loan China US$100m in an effort to improve the country's food safety, Food Production Daily has reported.

The loan will make up 70 per cent of the funding for China's plan to boost the food safety of agricultural commodities from Jilin Province.

The news comes in the wake of several high-profile food scandals in the country that have severely damaged China's reputation as a food producer.

In March Chinese health officials were accused of trying to cover up the discovery of 3.5 tonnes of tainted beans on the southern island of Hainan, while in the same month almost 10 tonnes of contaminated vegetables were found in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi in southern China.
