Ecuadorean export promotion agency Corpei has revealed that exports of fruits and vegetables reached some US$25.5m during the January to April period of 2008, according to figures from the Central Bank of Ecuador.

Between 2003 and 2007, the value of Ecuador’s fresh produce shipments has risen by 16 per cent, Corpei added.

The leading export items included broccoli, cassava, onions, asparagus, garlic, peppers and tomatoes, among others.

In 2007, Ecuador’s fruits and vegetable exports were worth some US$82m in total, with shipments headed to 38 countries worldwide.

The US was the largest importer, with 34 per cent of the export crop, followed by Colombia (with 17 per cent), Germany (11 per cent), Japan (10 per cent), the Netherlands (7 per cent), Sweden (5 per cent), and other countries (16 per cent).
