Maris Peer Marks Spencer Manor Fresh new potatoes

The UK's earliest ever crop of Maris Peer new potatoes is set to arrive in stores operated by Marks & Spencer (M&S) at the start of next week, according to Manor Fresh, the company which manages all of the retailer's fresh potato supply and a major share of its fresh vegetable business.

Traditionally, early Maris Peer potatoes have been available from late April onwards, but this year production from the south-west English region of Cornwall is poised to make a record early appearance.

Louisa Read, vegetable buyer at M&S commented: 'We are delighted to have the very first UK Maris Peer new potatoes on our shelves this year. This extra early crop was grown by specialist early producer Mark Rowe, making good use of carefully selected and sheltered growing areas, and Cornwall's milder winter climate.'

She continued: 'Consumers trust M&S to offer them the freshest produce throughout the year, and the fact that our favourite new potato variety is available so early in 2012 means that M&S customers can buy the freshest and tastiest new potatoes on the high street earlier than ever before.'

The Maris Peer new potato variety is widely available and, according to experienced food writer Sarah Jane Evans, has a skin that 'peels off easily when cooked to reveal a pale cream flesh. The texture is firm, and holds its shape well making it ideal for potato salads'.

The potatoes will be available from 26 March in certain branches of M&S, sold in 500g packs.
