Fruttital GF Group Fratelli Orsero bananas Albenga

Fruttital, the main import arm of Mediterranean fresh produce giant GF Group, is understood to be planning an eventual departure from its current headquarters in Albenga, near Genoa in north-western Italy.

The decision, announced by the division's managing director Paolo Mauti at the end of last week and reported in the Italian press, has apparently been prompted by a downturn in the volume of fruit handled by Fruttital in the wake of its recent high-profile split from Fresh Del Monte.

According to Mauti, the company intends to leave Albenga during the next couple of years, athough as yet no specific plans have been put in place.

In the meantime, around half of the firm's packhouse workers stand to lose their jobs as it halves the size of its fresh produce handling operation at the site.

Administrative roles in departments such as sales and marketing are not at risk, the group added.
