New figures collated by Spain's Ministry of Economic Data and published by Fepex have outlined a year-on-year fall in the value of Spain's fresh produce exports through July, despite higher volumes being shipped to overseas markets.
Spanish fruit and vegetable exports dropped 2 per cent in value terms through the month, down to €652m, despite volumes climbing 16 per cent to 877,910 tonnes.
Fruit exports fell 5 per cent in value to €504.2m and grew 13 per cent in volume to 679,753 tonnes, while vegetable shipments came to €147.7m and 198,157 tonnes, growth of 10 per cent and 29 per cent respectively.
Melons, nectarines and peaches led the way for fruit exports in July, with onions and potatoes heading up the vegetable category.
For the opening seven months of the year, Fepex noted that fruit exports had totalled 4.2m tonnes overall, up 3 per cent, with a value of €3.84m, up 2 per cent.
Vegetable exports for the January-July period came to 3.2m tonnes (+9 per cent) with a value of €2.84m (-0.5 per cent).
Meanwhile, fruit and vegetable imports into Spain during July stood at 163,315 tonnes, rising 6 per cent on the same month of 2013, while these imports fell in value terms, down 3 per cent to €122m.
