Agrexco tomatoes

Israeli fresh produce exporter Agrexco has revealed that it is anticipating a 50 per cent increase in exports of its Shiren variety of cherry tomatoes this year, with a 25 per cent jump in mini plum tomato exports.

Peak months for exports will be between November and May, according to product manager Amir Gutman, with brix levels standing at 7-9 per cent for the Shiren fruit and 8-9 per cent for mini plum tomatoes.

'The main cultivation areas for tomatoes are the Negrev Plateau and northern Negrev, where it is possible to grow tomatoes all year round,' Mr Gutman explained. 'Since Carmel-Agrexco prides itself on its environmental and health awareness, all of the growers there hold a GlobalGAP license.'

He said that extensive scientific research by the group, aimed at enhancing tomato taste and quality, has resulted in the development of new, sweeter varieties, to be marketed in small quantities in the future.

'Agrexco targets western and northern European countries as its main export destinations,' Mr Gutman added. 'However, exports to Eastern Europe will be increased substantially this year, and exports to the Far East will continue despite distance limitations.'
