Edeka Plus Netto

Edeka's chief executive officer Markus Mosa has revealed that the group is planning to create 8,000 new jobs throughout its network this year, despite the current global economic crisis.

Speaking to the German publication Hamburger Abendblatt, Mr Mosa said that he was predicting a strong future for discount stores in the country that could see them increase market share to over 50 per cent.

The discounter is maintaining that revenue growth will stand at 5 per cent in annual terms for the year, and is looking to expand market share to 30 per cent by 2010 from the current mark of 27 per cent.

On 1 January, Edeka was given approval by Germany's competition commission to merge its Netto stores with Tengelmann's Plus chain.
